Alex Tung is a PhD student in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) department at MIT, advised by Assistant Professor Mark Rau. Conducted jointly with Music and Theater Arts, his research focuses on spatial audio rendering, physical simulation of historical instruments, and acoustic-semantic models for harmonic tension.
Previously, Alex was a Senior Engineer in Qualcomm's Advanced Technology organization, where he has developed spatial audio and acoustics simulation technologies. His work on spatial capture, 6DoF HOA rendering, and binaural audio playback has been commercialized in products, published in patents and international conferences, and standardized by MPEG, 3GPP, and ETSI. Alex holds a BS and MS from UC San Diego, where he had researched sparse Bayesian learning for soundfield reconstruction at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography Noiselab and Sonic Arts R&D.
In his free time, Alex enjoys R&B music, coffee, rock climbing, and taking apart old audio equipment.
