This talk will cover a series of projects that use sound to create engaging experiences — exploring design and development through experiments in the lab and studio, the creation of live theatrical and musical performances for large audiences, and the capture, production, and delivery of personal listening experiences at home and in daily life. We will examine both historic and contemporary concepts in immersive headphone and speaker technology, authoring and design tools, and discuss the fundamentals of what is essential to crafting special sonic experiences. This will be presented through the lens of work with Tod Machover and the Opera of the Future group, Jacob Collier, as well as new ideas in development beyond music.
