Program
Music technology is a broad field of study with many applications in industry, academia, and the arts. At MIT, our focus is technical research in music technology that always centers the humanistic and artistic aspects of making music. We aim to study, discover, and develop new computational approaches to music that include:
- music information retrieval;
- generative algorithms;
- machine learning and AI;
- interaction and performance systems;
- digital instrument design;
- acoustics;
- audio signal processing;
- and software development for creative expression and music applications.
Our program is truly multidisciplinary, with faculty, labs, and curricula coming from the Music & Theater Arts Section in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS), and the School of Engineering (SoE).
We offer two master’s degrees through MIT Music. In addition, many of our faculty hold joint appointments between Music at MIT and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) in the School of Engineering (SoE). This allows EECS doctoral students to participate in music technology research with MIT Music faculty. MIT undergraduates may also take music technology courses and obtain a minor or concentration in music technology.
